SCULPTURE_BIO

Razor Clam. Purbeck Marble. I had collected some Razor Clam shells and once again blindly thought their form too simple. I had a piece of material that was so dimensionally suited to this subject that I reconsidered it. Once again closer observation revealed subtle intricacies and a wonderful, natural entasis, found in the architecture of ancient curving columns. Additionally, many bivalves have concentric growth lines that accentuate the form and record its life from genesis to its final incarnation. A little subtle abstraction accentuates these wonderful details. Some of the process of sculpting this piece is purposefully left to help describe the methods used. The large radius seen on the base is of the 900mm diamond saw, used as a primary tool. Marks and textures also remain to show the secondary diamond cutters used to make this otherwise impossibly delicate form. The repeating lines and details and polish are created using the traditions of our medieval forbears in a material that would be entirely familiar to them.
