Oculus. Laning Vein. I am always initially led by the stone in its raw state. Dimensions and scale are entirely dictated by the imperfect nature of such materials. Purbeck Stone is formed from sediments laid down in an ancient lagoon. It has a tendency to naturally split along these 'beds '. This is one of the many qualities that made it such a prized material, particularly in the pre-industrial era when cutting slabs was far too laborious. The original block was split along a natural fault that divided it into two thirds and one third of the original thickness. This lent itself nicely to a worn shell and is presented upright and mounted on a Bath Stone plinth to appreciate the form. The Stone is actually ancient coral sand and sculpted to give harmony to the piece.
